In this short story from P. G. Wodehouse's The Man Upstairs and Other Stories, Ruth Warden is depressed. One couldn't blame her, for she works in a pawn shop and her father is a degenerate gambler, forced to leave England or be cut off from his generous brother-in-law's loans. When charming Mr. Vince arrives in Ruth's life, he—after the briefest of "courtships"—asks for her hand. Though Ruth tries to convince herself she objects to the man, something about him arouses within her an undeniable attraction to him.
