Henry James (1843 - 1916) was an American author and literary critic. His novels usually focused on morality and consciousness. This novel is about 'doing the right thing' and the possible consequences of doing it. The three main protagonists are Jocelind and Ambrose a soon-to-be-married aristocratic couple, and Lady Vandeleur with whom Ambrose falls in love.
