'The Son of Clemenceau, A Novel of Modern Love and Life' is an adventure novel written by Alexandre Dumas fils. The story begins with a stranger walking through the southern suburbs of Munich at dusk, admiring the old architecture. As darkness falls, he becomes more solitary and begins to notice the poverty of the area. Suddenly, he hears the sound of shuffling feet and heavy sticks and sees a horde of beggars streaming out of the alleys and forming like soldiers for a review along the street. They spy the stranger but do not approach him. The stranger watches in horror as they disappear into the night, seeking means to survive yet another day.
