This book could be regarded as a companion to his much more famous work, "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea". Here the world to be conquered is not the sea, but the sky. At the time of writing (1886), the only method of air travel was the balloon; but Verne accurately describes a 'heavier-than-air' machine that will fly with the aid of propellers and electricity.
