The Girl on the Train - A Comprehensive Summary
Chapters 1-4
Rachel
July 5, 2013
Rachel is the "girl on the train" and she is riding home, looking out through window of the train, drinking gin and tonic from a can. She recollects her first holiday with Tom – the fishing villages, beaches and making love in the sand. The train often stops outside her favorite house, number fifteen. Rachel often sees a couple on their terrace and imagines them as Jason and Jess, "a perfect, golden couple." They remind her of her past relationship with Tom.
Tom now lives with Anna and their baby. Rachel stays with her friend, Cathy, who is a nice person. Nevertheless Rachel feels out of place. She is disturbed on days when she cannot catch a glimpse of Jess and Jason during her commute on the train.
Tom calls Rachel later that night and tells her to stop bugging him. He tells her that Anna is upset with her calling him. Rachel never mentioned calling Tom, or maybe she's forgotten it.
