An accidental remark on a television programme lands novelist Anne Medlicott in a potentially damaging libel suit. The programme is about Nazi sympathisers in England during the last war, and the other two guests are a distinguished exile from Germany and a painter. Anne has known both of these people from childhood – or has she? Forced out of the comfortable cocoon which she has woven round her life, Anne faces truths which are considerably harsher, more painful – and more healing – than she had ever imagined.
