هو جمال الدين ابو الفرج التيمي البكري ولد ببغداد وكان اهله تجارا في النحاس ولهذا يوجد في بعض سماءاته القديمه عبد الرحمن بن علي بن الجوزي مات والده وله من العمر نحو ثلاث سنين فلم يؤثر هذا اليتم المبكر على تنشئته تنشئه صالحه وتوجيهه الى طلب العلم لان عائلته كانت على جانب من الثراء.
