Medical planning guidance for responding to an attack with a "dirty bomb" - also called a radiologic dispersion device or improvised nuclear device - is provided in this updated document from the Department of Homeland Security's Working Group on Radiological Dispersal Device (RDD) Preparedness. It was developed to provide concise guidance to health care workers and first responders on the management of persons exposed to or suffering the effect of ionizing radiation as the result of the accidental or deliberate release of radioactive materials. This product was developed in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Health and Human Services, with the assistance of national experts in the medical management of radiation accidents.
