If you’re overweight, you’re at greater risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and dementia than normal weight people. This week’s show focuses on two additional health conditions, prostate cancer and sleep disorders, which also have a strong correlation to being overweight. Our first guest, Dr. Marc Garnick, is an internationally renowned expert in urologic and prostate cancers, a clinical professor at the Harvard Medical School, and he has a practice at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Garnick explains how and why excess weight makes men more susceptible to prostate cancer and why being overweight makes the recovery process more challenging. In an effort to help his patients lose weight, Dr. Garnick developed the Garnick Portion Control Minus Method. This is an easy, practical, sustainable diet that enables participants to lose anywhere from 18 to 24 pounds per year with just a few modest changes to their existing eating practices. Dr. Garnick explains exactly how to follow the diet and why it works. Our second guest is Dr. Michele Gaier, a Diplomat of the American Board of Sleep Medicine and the Medical Director of the Sleep Evaluation Center at the Lakes Region General Hospital in New Hampshire. Dr. Gaier tells how lack of sleep increases the likelihood that you’ll be overweight and how a weight condition makes you more susceptible to sleep apnea. You’ll learn what sleep apnea is, why it’s a dangerous condition, and how to treat it. And finally, host Karen Bentley talks about the spiritual solution for stopping yourself from obsessing about your body.
