Nora Helmers has recently placed herself at considerable financial risk so that her husband, the overbearing Torvald, could recuperate from an illness. Torvald thinks Nora careless and childlike — his doll — and proves unable to comprehend the depth of her affection and sacrifice. Nora comes to see her marriage for what it is and will contemplate the unthinkable.

A Doll's House was first staged in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1879. The play is important for its criticism of 19th century marriage norms — the first seeds of feminism.
