Edward Lear penned perhaps his most famous nonsense poem – The Owl and the Pussycat – as a get-well treat for the young daughter of his friend John Addington Symonds in December 1867. This and others of his enchanting verse can now be enjoyed by a new generation in this unique gift edition, celebrating the bicentenary of his birth. Set sail in a sieve with 'The Jumblies', wander through forests with 'The Dong with a Luminous Nose', and escape with the creatures of 'Calico Pie'. Each poem in this collection is illuminated with a series of stunning new illustrations by award-winning artist Robert Ingpen, who has added his own discovery of the botany of Bong-tree Land. Also included are some of Lear's own drawings of birds, as well as a brief glimpse into the life of the man himself, completing the tribute to such an extraordinary and enduring talent.
