Mobster Anthony "Fat Tony" Salerno ascended quickly in the world of organized crime. As a Genovese family member he was involved in the policy racket, gambling and bookmaking. Based in East Harlem he was a close associate of such mobsters as Joe Adonis, Frankie Carbo, "Charley Bullets" Albero and "Tough Joey" Rao. In 1959 Salerno was publicized first as "Mister X". He was later identified as a member of the syndicate who bankrolled the first heavyweight title fight between Ingemar Johansson and Floyd Patterson.
