This is a historical novel that revolves around a young French girl named Eagle de Ferrier. Eagle, along with her father, a French aristocrat, and their servant, are seeking refuge in St. Bartholomew's Close in London in 1795, as they plan to sail to America soon. While staying in St. Bat's, Eagle encounters a young boy who is unresponsive and appears to be mentally challenged. She discovers that his name is Lazarre and that he was brought there by a mysterious man who then disappeared. Eagle takes it upon herself to care for Lazarre and attempts to bring him out of his shell. As the story progresses, Eagle's father and their servant are arrested by the French revolutionary authorities who seek to execute all French aristocrats.
