Fred Tom Smith aka "Smitty Smith" was a Mafia thug who was associated with extortion in the jukebox and coin machine industry. Allegedly, Smith received payments from such notorious mobsters as Tony Accardo and Jake Guzik. The early and late 1950s was an era of Mafia encroachment in the recording industry. In Chicago, New York and other major U.S. cities the mob intervened to control records played by disc jockeys on radio stations.
