Singaporeans are familiar with the popular mythos of Sir Stamford Raffles, sole and exclusive founder of modern Singapore, who called a bustling port into being with his mighty hand, where only a sleepy fishing village stood before. Some may also recall the bumbling idiot William Farquhar, who could not even be trusted to oversee the colony and execute Raffles' clear plan for a few short years. This ebook attempts to correct this myth and re-establish Farquhar's significant role vis-à-vis Raffles in the founding of Singapore and its early years (1819-1821), via the colorful medium of rhyming verse.
