In September 1964 gambling records found in the Long Island home of bookie Mickey Candela were part of a police investigation into organized crime in the area. On September 16 Candela was detained in $25,000 bond. He was held in custody as a material witness because authorities believed his life was in danger. Candela had refused to destroy loanshark records kept inside his 22 Montgomery Avenue, North Babylon home. On September 17th borrowers records, listing names, were brought before Suffolk District Attorney James Catterson.
