레이디 애슬린(Lady Athlyne by Bram Stoker)(1908)은 드라큘라(Dracula)(1897)의 작가 브램 스토커의 '로맨스 소설'로 1908년 영국 런던 William Heinemann 출판사에서 출간된 작품입니다. 미국에서는 이듬해 Frank Lovell & Company에서 출간하였습니다. 브램 스토커와 로맨스 소설이라니 생뚱맞은 조합 같지만, 그는 이듬해에도 수의를 입은 여인(The Lady of the Shroud by Bram Stoker)(1909)란 로맨스 요소가 가미된 작품을 출간했습니다. 작품은 여주인공 조이 오길비(Joy Ogilvie)란 여성이 애슬린 경(Lord Athlyne)을 만나기도 전에, 레이디 애슬린(Lady Athlyne)이라 불리고 실제로 그를 만나 결혼함으로써 레이디 애슬린(Lady Athlyne)이란 '이름'을 얻는 일련의 과정을 로맨틱하게 그리고 있습니다. 테마여행신문 TTN Korea 영어고전(English Classics)과 함께 어제도, 오늘도, 내일도 멋진 문학여행을! B 조이의 이모 주디 헤이즈(Judy Hayes), 일명 미스 쥬디스(Miss Judith)와 여주인공 조이 오길비(Joy Ogilvie), 오브리엔 부인(Mrs. O'Brien)은 뉴욕에서 이탈리아로 향하는 길에서 만나게 됩니다. 오브리엔 부인(Mrs. O'Brien)은 남주인공 애슬린 경(Lord Athlyne)을 키운 가정부로써 그에게 깊은 애정을 가졌습니다. 오브리엔 부인이 자신이 키운 애슬린 경에 대한 이야기를 나누게 되고, 조이는 군인으로써 맹활약한 그의 기사를 보고 그에 대한 호감을 가지게 됩니다. 급기야 주디는 조이를 레이디 애슬린(Lady Athlyne)이라 부를 정도로 친근하게 여기게 되었지요! 말에는 힘이 있으니, 과연 레이디 애슬린(Lady Athlyne)은 훗날 애슬린은 직접 만나게 될 것이란 클리셰인 셈입니다. 그러나 완고한 조이의 아버지 오길비 대령(Colonel Ogilvie)은 이 같은 농담이 불편하기만 합니다.......Colonel Ogilvie was distinctly annoyed. When he could look on Lord Athlyne as dead he could admire his bravery, and even tolerate the existence that had been. But this chopping and changing—this being dead and coming to life again—was disturbing. What sort of fellow was he that couldn't make up his mind on any subject? Couldn't he remain dead like a gentleman? He had died like one; wasn't that enough! Joy saw that he was not pleased. She was too glad for the moment to take her father's attitude to heart; but every instinct in her told her not to remain. With regard to his quest after his alleged wife the first conclusion Lord Athlyne came to was that he must go incognito—"under an alias" he expressed it to himself. Otherwise he would give warning of his presence, and that was the very thing which he wished to avoid. The woman must be an unscrupulous one or she would not have entered on such a scheme of fraud; and she would naturally be quick to protect herself by concealment or flight. An ordinary individual would have left such an investigation to his solicitors who would have procured the services of local detectives. But then Athlyne was not an ordinary individual.
